Let’s face it, pretty photos just aren’t doing the trick anymore.

In the last year, I’ve seen a shift in what makes people want to follow a business on Instagram and in what converts followers to customers.

It all boils down to this: people want to connect with people, not businesses. Sure, your followers want to know more about your services, but they also want to know:

  • How you can help them
  • Why you started your business
  • The story behind your services
  • What you love outside of your business
  • And most importantly, who you are

 

Sharing who you are, what you do, and why you do it with your followers in open and honest ways that are true to you is what makes followers feel like they just need to hire you.

But how (and where) should you share your story on Instagram?

The best way to share your story and create a connection is by focusing on your captions.

It’s been my experience that the posts where I share something personal — my why, my journey into entrepreneurship, or current struggle — are the ones that get the most engagement.

It can feel uncomfortable stepping out from behind the data and info at first, but trust me, it’s the best thing you can do for your business.

The key here is to write the caption as if you’re talking to a friend. This will help your post (and your business) feel more human, which will increase your engagement and encourage your followers to take action.

If you’re feeling stumped about where to begin, start by answering these questions:

  • Why did you start your business?
  • When did you realize this is exactly what you’ve always wanted to do?
  • Why do you do what you do?
  • How does what you do help people?
  • And don’t forget to show your face in your feed and introduce yourself to your followers!

 

My favorite way to do this is to participate in #FridayIntroductions. Every Friday, creative biz owners share a photo of themselves on Instagram and introduce themselves to their audience in a fun, casual way.

This could be anything from “I started my business because…” to “Five things you may not know about me.” Really anything that will help your followers get to know you better.

Social media has changed the way businesses market themselves for the better—it’s more personal, honest, and real.

This shift to more personal marketing allows businesses like yours to build a special connection with followers. It establishes a bond that creates loyal clients who become your biggest fans and  feel like friends.

And it all starts with your caption.
