Have you ever opened Instagram, excited by the possibility of seeing new followers, comments, and direct messages from potential customers or clients, only to feel let down by the complete lack of engagement?

You’re not alone.

Marketing your business on Instagram can sometimes feel like a full-time job. You’re putting in the hours, sharing great content, and putting yourself out there. So why aren’t you seeing the results you want?

We all dream of having a large, engaged audience that values our content, sings our praises to everyone they meet, and buys our products or services.

If you’re feeling like that dream will never become a reality for you, think again.

Keep reading to learn how you can increase your engagement daily in just 3 steps!

Step #1 – Add a call to action to your post

Before you hit send on today’s post, go back and add a clear call to action to the beginning or end of your caption.

Put yourself in your follower’s shoes: Imagine stopping mid-scroll because this amazing photo caught your attention. You read the entire post and really enjoy what was shared, but you’re not sure what to do next, so you double tap and move on.

Because you didn’t leave a call to action, your follower passively engaged with your content and promptly forgot about it.

This is exactly what you don’t want your followers to do.

You want everyone who sees your post to take action! You want them to be so excited about your post that they tag their friends or share it in a direct message. You want them to have no other option but to leave a comment, click the link in your profile, or follow you if they aren’t already.

If you want people to engage with your content, you need to give them a reason to engage.

You can do this by always adding a clear call to action to your post to drive engagement. Calls to action include:

  • Leave a comment
  • Tag your friends
  • Share this post in a direct message
  • Answer a question
  • Visit my website
  • Enter my giveaway
  • Shop my post

 

Feel free to word your call to action however you want, but anyone reading your post should know exactly what action to take before they keep scrolling.

Step #2 – Respond to comments

If a follower went to leave a comment and noticed that none of the other comments filled with questions, kind words, or complaints have a response from you (within reason, of course), do you think they’ll follow through with leaving their comment?

Unfortunately, most people would close out of your post and move on.

People want to know that they’re being heard, and the best and easiest way to do that is by responding to your comments.

My general rule of thumb is to respond to comments, questions, and direct messages within 24 hours of receiving them. However, according to a report from Sprout Social, most people expect a response from a brand within 4 hours and will move on to a competitor if they haven’t heard back in what they consider a reasonable time.

Obviously, the time in which you respond to any inquiries or complaints will vary depending on the type of business you have, but the lesson hits home for any business using social media as a marketing tool: don’t leave your followers hanging.

Third-party tools, like Later’s Conversations feature, can help you keep track of all incoming comments and allows you to respond directly from your desktop. Of course, you can always do it the old-fashioned way by responding to comments through the app, especially if you have a smaller account, but consider some additional help if you find that you’re unable to keep up with the amount of comments and direct messages you receive daily.

Step #3 – Connect with 10 new-to-you people

With 500 million daily active users, you’re bound to find a new potential customer or client on Instagram.

But here’s the thing: you have you put in the work to find these people and bring them back to your profile.

Interact with 10 new-to-you people on Instagram daily to build meaningful relationships and steadily grow your account with the right people.

You can find your dream customer or client in:

  • Targeted hashtags
  • Location tags of places they frequently hang out
  • Comments on your competitor’s posts
  • The Explore tab (posts and Stories)

 

Simply double tapping a post or leaving a genuine comment can spark a connection between you and a potential new follower, so get out there and engage!
